How Do Edibles Work?

Cannabis-infused food and beverages are a discreet and convenient way to enjoy the effects of the plant without inhaling or smoking. Dosing can be tricky with inhalation, but edibles make it easy to consume a precise amount of cannabinoids. Produced by infusing a product with cannabis oil or cannabis butter, edibles are available in a wide variety of products from desserts to drinks. They are easy to consume and don’t require additional tools. While edibles have a slower onset than inhalation, the effects last a lot longer, in some cases 6-12 hours. Edibles also provide stronger physical effects, which some people prefer over other cannabis consumption methods.

When an edible is consumed, the body breaks it down and metabolizes it, which produces 11-hydroxy-THC. This is a metabolite that binds more readily to receptors in the brain and body, therefore exerting stronger, longer lasting effects than inhaled THC. Newer edibles are made with a process called nanoemulsion, where THC is broken down into microscopic particles. For maximum effect, it is recommended to consume edibles with food – preferably a fat. Cannabinoids are fat-soluble so the edible will break down and take effect faster and more efficiently.
